A Life With Rhythm

1945 – 2026

Some people go through life following the beat. Norman Frederick Calp helped create it.

Born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, Norman's life was shaped by family, music, friendship and a strong connection to his community.

Music was a big part of Norman's story. A talented drummer, he became part of the exciting Canadian music scene of the 1960s and 70s. He played with Chapter V, a Halifax group whose members included musicians who would go on to have significant careers in Canadian music.

Norman's own musical journey put him alongside some remarkable talent. Over the years he performed with artists including Ronnie Hawkins and Hagood Hardy, among others.

He later returned to Nova Scotia and became one of the original musicians in Soma, an ambitious Maritime band formed in 1969 from members of several established groups. Norman was behind the drums for Soma's first performance at Delmer's Barn outside Truro — a show that sold out.

But Norman didn't keep his musical knowledge to himself. In later years he taught drums in New Brunswick, passing along the skill and love of music that had been such an important part of his own life.

Music, however, was only one side of Norman.

He was also part of a well-known Saint John family business. His father, Jack Calp, opened Jack Calp's Men's Wear in 1948. Norman began learning the business when he was still a boy, accompanying his father to clothing showrooms and learning how to recognize fine fabrics and quality workmanship.

Eventually Norman followed in his father's footsteps and took over the management of Jack Calp's. The store became a familiar part of downtown Saint John and remained in business until Norman's retirement in the early 2000s.

Behind all of those accomplishments was a husband, father, cousin, friend, musician and teacher.

Norman shared his life with his wife, Bonnie, and together they raised their children, Keiver and Keri. Bonnie passed away in 2011.

Norman's was a life with more than a few chapters — from the clothing racks of the family store in Saint John to drums, recording studios, stages and packed Maritime dance halls.

And somewhere along the way, he left a little of his rhythm with everyone who knew him.

The song may end, but the beat carries on.
